Hey there!

Resting Cello Face is a blog about the joy of learning cello as an adult beginner with no musical background. I began this project, after watching so many “beginner” & “zero to 2 years” videos of string players who were, frankly, so much better than I. After wallowing in despair for a moment, I decided to make my own videos, offering a realistc “warts & all” peek in to what progress actually looks like.

I started learning cello in the summer of 2017. I take weekly private lessons with a brilliant Suzuki teacher. For the first 2 years, my weekly lessons were ½ hour; beginning in fall of 2019, these increased to ¾ hour.

In addition to private lessons, I try to practice 30 minutes daily. I don’t always succeed. I also try to play through my learned repitoire at least once a week. I mostly succeed.

My tonality is pretty good, and I tend to learn pieces quickly, however rhythm & dynamics are always .

For each video I post, I will share how long I’ve been practicing the piece. I will create videos of pieces at different levels of polish; they won’t all be “performance” ready. I think its important, especially for adult beginners, for us to hear how far from perfect other people also sound, and to remind ourselves that this is okay.
